🎨 How to color it

Color the puppy soft cream, the big jack-o’-lantern bright orange, the pumpkin cap deep amber, and the crescent moon buttery yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the carved eyes, leaf veins, and little stars, then fill the pumpkin’s wide curved sections with smooth marker strokes. Try a midnight-blue background that fades lighter around the moon, so the puppy’s warm Halloween colors glow.

Under the orchard-edge moon, Hazel carried one glow-seed under her tongue and padded from pumpkin to pumpkin, tap-tap, testing her private challenge: every grin must shine before the last star blinked. The seed tasted like warm toast and rain. She had saved it for the grand pumpkin hollow, the one with room enough for a puppy to sit inside.

Then she heard a sniffle from the ditch. A tiny field cricket shivered beside a cracked pumpkin, rubbing his legs with a dry whisper. “My lantern went out,” he said. No one else was near. Hazel looked at the grand pumpkin. She looked at the cricket’s dark doorway. Then she tucked the glow-seed into his little jack-o’-lantern and pushed it close to him.

The moon saw. The stars saw. The grand pumpkin, empty and waiting, smelled the generous spark on Hazel’s breath and lit from the inside anyway, wide grin and all. Ever since, jack-o’-lanterns keep smiling when someone gives light away in secret—and if you check the big pumpkin’s face, you might catch the grin Hazel earned without keeping the seed.
