🎨 How to color it

Color the witch hat deep plum with tan patches, the starry belt golden yellow, the broom straw honey brown, and the porch boards warm cedar. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny stars, stitches, leaf veins, and broom bristles, then switch to broader strokes for the hat and wooden rails. Try a pale indigo night sky behind the smiling crescent moon so the autumn leaves can pop in orange, russet, and red.

Under the moon porch, Quincy tapped the broom handle and invented Leaf-Limbo: every leaf had to swoop under the hat brim before he whispered its secret number. Crunch, swish, plunk—oak was one, maple was two, skinny birch was three. The air smelled like dry wood and chilly apples. He kept score on the hat’s buckle with a bit of porch chalk, grinning each time the wind cheated for him.

The game grew fussier. A leaf that spun twice earned a giggle-point. A leaf that landed on a patch got a whisper-point. “No arguing, hat,” Quincy said, because the brim had wobbled exactly like it disagreed. The crescent moon looked as if it knew the rules and was trying not to laugh.

Then the hat tipped forward and sneezed out a tiny chalk mark: Q. Quincy blinked. The next gust sent three leaves around him in a neat circle, and the buckle flashed another mark: 1. The hat had not been the goal at all. It had been counting how many times Quincy ran around with curiosity chasing his boots—so when you spot the grin above that porch, dare yourself to find who is winning Leaf-Limbo under the moon porch.
