🎨 How to color it

Give the mandrill a smoky gray coat, a pale cream beard, a soft pink nose, and deep emerald leaves around the branches. Use sharp colored pencils for the fine fur strokes and the narrow leaf cuts, coloring outward from the mandrill’s eyes so the face stays crisp. Try a quiet blue shadow under the crossed arms and feet to make the seated pose feel tucked into the jungle.

At the vine threshold, Zedro pressed both hands to the cool bark and waited for the gate-vines to loosen. He needed to carry moon-fig seeds to the inner grove before the silver beetles woke, but the vines stayed braided tight, smelling of rain and green pepper. A tiny shell clicked beside his foot. “Do not pull,” said a snail with a voice like wet leaves. “Count what does not move.”

Zedro counted the still things: one curled root, two sleeping moths, three drops trembling on a leaf. His knees ached. Mist beaded in his cheek fur. At last, the snail drew a shining path across his muzzle—down, around, and back again—while the vines slowly sighed open.

The seeds reached the grove before dawn, and the snail’s silver trail dried into dark stripes for every child of Zedro after him. Since then, mandrills have worn patient lines on their faces, and if you study Zedro’s quiet stare, can you guess what he is still counting?
