Under the red cap roof, Nora set a tiny basket by the round door. “I’ll make a path all by myself,” she whispered, and stepped into the damp grass. The morning smelled like rain and leaves. She picked flat pebbles: plink, plunk, plink.
By the fern patch, a snail’s shell bumped a root. Nora gave it her smoothest pebble for a bridge. Near the hedge, a bird needed one pebble to hold down straw in the breeze. Nora came home with only crooked stones, but her hands knew what to do. She pressed them into a wobbly, wonderful path.
