🎨 How to color it

Give the mushroom caps a cheerful red, the stems a creamy ivory, the mossy mound a bright spring green, and the scattered leaves golden yellow. Use chunky crayons or markers for the big caps and stems, then help your child add quick green strokes in the thin grass blades. For a fun twist, color the underside gills in rainbow stripes so the three mushrooms look ready for a forest parade.

Across a bumpy forest hill, Bram bounced on his stem. Swish went the grass. Crunch went the dry leaves. He wanted to share his biggest cheer with the whole hill, so he called, “Ready, friends?” Two smaller mushrooms wiggled close, and the trees leaned in with leafy arms.

Bram lifted his cap to shout hooray—and froze. Underneath, where nobody had looked, tiny beetles had painted bright parade stripes between the gills. Tap-tap-tap went their acorn drums. Bram laughed so hard the moss shook, and everyone cheered together. Next time you spot the space under Bram’s cap, can you hear that bumpy-hill hooray?
