Across a bumpy forest hill, Bram bounced on his stem. Swish went the grass. Crunch went the dry leaves. He wanted to share his biggest cheer with the whole hill, so he called, “Ready, friends?” Two smaller mushrooms wiggled close, and the trees leaned in with leafy arms.
Bram lifted his cap to shout hooray—and froze. Underneath, where nobody had looked, tiny beetles had painted bright parade stripes between the gills. Tap-tap-tap went their acorn drums.
