Every evening, Vera circled the Thankful Tree after the feast tents emptied, listening for the Rootlight bell beneath its bark and smelling cold leaves, candle smoke, and rain-dark soil. Until one windy dusk, the banner snapped loose and the whole hill seemed to shout. Because of that, she chased the ribbon through acorns that clicked like hoofbeats; because of that, she noticed one acorn hanging too still, sealed with wax. “Wait,” she whispered, fingers numb but steady. Inside was no bell, only a brass key. At last she knelt by the oldest root, turned the key in a hidden hollow, and golden light raced upward through every patient spiral.
