Under the tallest blossoms, Quilla heard the secret sound first: tik-tik, tik-tik, like a bead rolling inside a dry seedpod. She wanted one silver rain-thread for the little bud that drooped beside her ribs. The old pads whispered, “Stay in the middle, where the finches can’t peck and the wind can’t comb you flat.” But Quilla slid down through spear leaves and curling vines, scraping off three tiny spines on the way.
At the lowest pad, where no blossom leaned and nobody bothered to look, the tik-tik grew brighter. Quilla pushed her sore edge under the cool sand. There, hidden in the roots, was not one rain-thread but a whole glimmering nest of them, braided around beetle shells and smelling of stone after storm.
“Take only what hums,” said a pill bug, very small and very official. Quilla carried back a single shining strand. The drooping bud drank it and opened into a flower the exact color of morning. If you peer between the lowest leaves and the big front bloom, you might find the place where Quilla lost three spines and found where she belonged: under the tallest blossoms, tik-tik, tik-tik.
