Behind the plant-shop shelf, when the watering can went drip-drip, Nico tucked a bent tin button under his root. He wanted to ring the tiny bell for the morning sun, but the bell rope hung in the open aisle, where everyone could hear.
The button had come from his first pot, so he squeezed it tight and shuffled closer. His sides prickled with little cold zips. “Just one ding,” whispered Fern, rustling like paper.
