🎨 How to color it

Give the velociraptor sandy tan skin, rusty orange head feathers, olive-green grass clumps, and cool blue-gray mountains. Use a sharp pencil for the feather crest, claws, and many footprint edges, then switch to broader strokes for the hills and sky. Try making the tracks darker near the raptor’s nose and lighter as they trail away, like a clue fading into the valley.

Each morning, before the sun warmed the stones, Niko raced through the upland basin to copy one new footprint in the dust. He had set himself a fierce little challenge: fill his bark map with every track before the noon cicadas began their zzz-zzzing song.

Until one day, a line of huge three-toed prints crossed his path, each one deeper than a soup bowl and smelling of rain-wet clay. Because of that, Niko forgot his map and followed them over knobby grass, past silver rocks, and between shrubs buzzing with beetles. Because of THAT, every creature he passed joined the chase—tiny compsognathus, shell-backed turtles, even the shy crestbirds flapping low. “This track is too big to keep secret!” Niko called.

At last the prints ended at a dry mud flat, perfect and smooth. Niko stamped one foot beside them, then another, and the whole crowd thundered after him, making a wild trail of shapes to share before noon. Next time you see those big prints, can you spot where Niko’s joyful parade began before the sun warmed the stones?
