🎨 How to color it

Color the kitten soft silver-gray, the pumpkins rich orange, the corn golden yellow, and the Thanksgiving banner cranberry red. Use sharp colored pencils for the basket weave, leaf veins, and the kitten’s striped fur, then switch to broader strokes for the pumpkins and banner letters. Try making the falling leaves a mix of amber, rust, and maple red so the white space feels like a crisp autumn breeze.

Under the warm kitchen window, Maple batted at a ribbon and waited for the tiny silver dinner bell to ring. No jingle came. Only the papery scratch of leaves skittered under the door and the buttery smell of pie drifted from the table. If the bell stayed missing, Grandma Nell would call everyone in with her tired voice instead. Maple hopped down from her rug and followed a faint tick-tick-tick toward the harvest basket.

The journey cost her one perfect whisker curl when she squeezed behind the broom, and three sneezes when she nosed past the wheat. Tick-tick. Beneath the basket’s loose bottom, where nobody ever looked, sat the bell wrapped in a maple leaf—along with a folded note: RING WHEN JOY IS TOO BIG TO HOLD. Maple hooked the bell’s ribbon in her teeth and tugged it free.

“Jing-jing!” she called, racing back through the leaf smell and pie warmth. Chairs scraped, feet thumped, and laughter spilled into the kitchen before the first slice was served. Look near the harvest basket again—you can almost hear Maple’s tiny silver dinner bell under the warm kitchen window.
