Under the market-lane sycamore, Zadie taped her handmade sign to the stand and lined up paper cups with a papery shuff-shuff. She had cut every lemon label herself, wobbly leaves and all, and stirred her “August Special” until the pitcher smelled like sunshine and sugar. Beside the sign, she added a cardboard button marked SOUR, because every grand invention needed a button.
Neighbors came by for refills, and Zadie let them press the button before she poured. Click! She dropped in one lemon slice. Click-click! Two slices. The cups clinked, the awning snapped in the warm breeze, and Zadie’s grin got stickier each time someone said, “You made this whole thing?”
Then the littlest customer pressed SOUR and a tiny paper tongue popped from beneath the August sign with a rude little pfft. Zadie froze—then howled. Her brother had hidden it there, but the stand had made the joke work. She taped the tongue in place like an official feature and wrote: EXTRA SILLY, FREE.
