Until one August noon, the buoys clanged wrong and a hot wind snapped the flags backward. Because of that, Vera followed the seed’s sudden pull past the safe markers; because of that, she found the reef bell jammed with kelp, silent under racing foam. “Not yet,” she told her shaking hands. Finally she cut it free, and the harbor rang open where the black seed had pointed.
