🎨 How to color it

Color the backpack ocean blue with yellow stars, the school bus golden yellow, the brick school warm red, and the apple bright crimson. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny zipper teeth, pencil stickers, ABC tag, and brick lines so the small shapes stay clear. Try a sunrise peach glow inside the open school doorway, as if the first morning is hiding a secret welcome.

Under a sky that smelled like hot pavement and cut grass, Tessa patted every pocket of her backpack for her bus pass. The first bell would clang soon, and the open school doors looked as tall as a castle gate. She stepped away from her usual bench to search the front walk, giving up the last cool sip from her water bottle to rinse mud off a small red apple rolling by the steps.

“Not mine,” the apple whispered, its leaf twitching like a tiny green flag. Tessa froze. Behind the book stack beside it, she found a folded paper: BUS PASS, RETURN TO OFFICE. No name. Her own pass was still clipped inside her bag, hidden under the ABC tag. She could have hurried in, but the office was down the echoing hall, past floors that smelled of wax and pencil shavings.

Tessa carried the stranger’s pass inside and slipped it through the office slot. On the way back, she tucked the apple on the books and wrote, Welcome, whoever you are. Nobody saw. The bell rang, bright and brave, under a sky that still smelled like hot pavement and cut grass—and if you peek at the steps, you may spot the little red keeper of her secret.
