🎨 How to color it

Try a deep teal body for the rocket, coral and gold accents inside the zentangle panels, violet crescent moons, and pale yellow stars. Use sharp colored pencils and color one patterned compartment at a time, since the paisleys, spirals, petals, and zigzags are packed tightly together. For a polished twist, make the rocket’s flame fade from white-hot yellow to orange to magenta while leaving the airy swirl trails softly silver.

The story behind this coloring page

Every day, Calder traced the rocket’s carved seams with a silver stylus, hunting for one line that did not end in a curl, petal, or sharp little zigzag. The work smelled of warm metal and pencil dust, and the stars outside made no sound at all. Until one day, his stylus slipped into a plain ring around the round window, and the ring gave a soft click.

Because of that, a narrow hatch opened where every mechanic had admired the decoration and never pressed. Because of that, a folded strip of black paper breathed out, speckled with pinprick lights that matched no chart on board. Calder’s hand shook only a little as he fed the strip into the reader. “Show me,” he whispered.

At last the reader hummed, and the rocket turned toward a dark gap between two familiar constellations. There was no trumpet, no order, only the small courage of touching the launch key before certainty arrived. Behind him, the hidden hatch closed with the same soft click, and ahead waited one line that did not end in a curl.
