Every day, Pippa rolled her striped ball across the hot playground path and tapped the giant AUGUST sign: A, U, G, U, S, T. Tap-tap, thump-thump! She wanted to find what made the sign rattle in the warm wind. One day, the G answered with a tiny clink, and a watermelon seed popped out like a black little rocket.
Because of that, Pippa pressed her ear to the letter and smelled sweet melon. Because of THAT, she nudged the curve of the G until it swung open—creeeak! Inside sat a folded star map, sticky with juice. “Race me to the sun flag!” she shouted, and her ball bounced after her past cloud cutouts and bright paper stars. At the flag, the whole August picnic burst open with slices and fizzy lemonade. Next time you see the big G, can you hear the tap-tap, thump-thump hiding there?
