🎨 How to color it

Color the panda’s ear rims, eye patches, paws, and tail soft black, the bamboo stalks fresh green, and the leafy shoots a lighter lime. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow bamboo leaves and work from the outer tips toward each stem so the points stay crisp. Try a pale mint background behind the crowded stalks to make the panda’s round white face pop forward.

By the breakfast rock, five leaf-shadows wiggled on Pip’s paw. He whispered, “Five shapes before moonrise,” and tucked a flat pebble behind his ear as a counter. The best leaves grew past the nap hollow, where the bamboo clicked like chopsticks in the wind and the air smelled green and rainy. Pip stepped out anyway, because a secret challenge only counts if nobody cheers for you.

He found a spear leaf, a spoon leaf, and one skinny as a cricket leg. Then a hollow thunk came from the old panda gate. A tiny beetle had wedged itself under a peeled bamboo strip, buzzing like a trapped zipper. Pip used his favorite tender shoot to lever it free, and the shoot snapped. There went lunch. The beetle flicked its wings and pointed with one antenna toward a dark, leafy tunnel.

Inside, silver light pooled on a clump of bamboo with leaves shaped like little paws. Pip picked five, but carried six home: one for the breakfast rock, where it fit the shadows exactly. Here’s the secret—if you follow the leaf points around Pip, you might find the paw-shaped one that told him he already belonged by the breakfast rock.
