🎨 How to color it

Give the hedgehog warm chestnut fur, the acorn a golden tan cap with a cocoa shell, the maple leaves pumpkin orange, and the spotted mushroom a cheerful red top. Use chunky crayons for the hedgehog’s big body and leaves, then switch to a sharpened pencil or crayon tip for the acorn cap’s tiny scallops. Try making the leaves around the edges darker than the ones near the hedgehog, like a secret tunnel of fall color.

The story behind this coloring page

The Acorn With a Wink — Under the warmest leaf in the brambly nook, Fenn tapped his acorn twice. Read the full story →

Under the warmest leaf in the brambly nook, Fenn tapped his acorn twice. Tap-tap meant, “Keep my secret.” He wanted one more acorn just like it, because this one had a tiny mark that looked like a wink. Then the wink seemed to point toward the curly vines beyond home.

Fenn squeezed through dry leaves that went shush-shush on his prickles. He paid a small price: three burrs stuck to his fluff, and his paws smelled like damp mushroom caps. At the spotted mushroom, a beetle whispered, “That acorn is not winking. It is a door-knock.”

Fenn knocked. Tap-tap. A seed popped loose from the cap and rolled into his paws, striped like a little map. He hurried home with no matching acorn at all, only a better secret. Next time you see Fenn holding that acorn, can you spot the wink that started the shush-shush journey?
