🎨 How to color it

Color the turkey’s body warm chestnut, his fan feathers in bands of russet, gold, and teal, the pie crust honey brown, and the pumpkins soft orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the many feather stripes and scalloped chest feathers, then switch to a broader marker for the big pie filling. Try making each falling leaf a different autumn color so the turkey looks like he is standing in a tiny leaf storm.

Beside the orchard table, Gus tucked his wings around Aunt Rue’s maple pie and hummed the crumb-song under his breath: tap, whistle, hum. He wanted to keep the tune safe until supper, because one wrong note could make the crust sigh flat. Then a round red berry rolled off the garnish, blinked, and whispered, “Follow the nut with the striped cap.”

Gus stepped beyond the warm cinnamon smell into cold leaves that crackled like paper secrets. He followed one acorn, then another, past pumpkin stems and silver grass. A thorn snagged his best tail feather; he left it shining on the path. At the fence, he found field mice tapping nutshell drums, unable to start their feast without the missing beat.

Gus puffed up, gave them tap, whistle, hum, and the whole orchard answered—spoons on bowls, berries on leaves, paws on plates. Joy bounced so loudly he carried it back instead of the feather. If you spot the pie with its leafy curl, can you hear the crumb-song beginning again?
