🎨 How to color it

Layer the cornucopia in chestnut and honey browns, make the pumpkins burnt orange and creamy white, color the wheat golden ocher, and give the grapes a deep concord purple. Use sharp pencils for the basket weave, moving one band at a time so the over-under pattern stays crisp beside the fine wheat awns. For a quiet autumn glow, shade the open space behind the horn with a very pale sage or warm gray, then leave a few floating berries bright as tiny sparks.

At the last hour of the harvest market, Rowan folded his ink-stained ledger and left the warm booth for one pear, the soft kind Mrs. Vale could eat with tea. Stalls were shutting with papery rustles; wheat dust sweetened the air. He had only two coins, and one slipped through a grate with a small, cold clink. So he traded his wool glove to a cider seller for a bruised apple and kept walking under the slow fall of leaves.

Beyond the last awning, an old cornucopia lay tipped in the straw, emptied after the parade. Rowan reached inside, not for himself but to hide the apple from frost until morning. His fingers touched folded paper, dry as a leaf. “For whoever comes looking after the plenty is gone,” it said, and inside waited a pear, two acorns carved with initials, and a silver coin. Rowan left the coin beneath the basket’s rim for the next late walker, then carried the pear home through wheat dust and papery rustles.
