🎨 How to color it

Layer the owl in tawny brown and cream, color the maple leaves with russet, gold, and cranberry, and make the moon a pale butter yellow. Use sharp pencils for the feather scallops and leaf veins, then switch to smoother pressure for the broad circular border. For a mischievous night effect, shade the glass pieces behind the owl from deep indigo at the top to smoky violet near the branch.

Every evening, Horace tapped the brass rail of the moon archive and allowed himself exactly thirteen winks before work: no more, no fewer, a private challenge that kept his reputation pleasantly annoying. The archive smelled of dust, cold stone, and old candle smoke. Until one night, on wink fourteen—which he insisted was only a sneeze with ambition—a new star pricked itself into the glass ceiling.

Because of that, Horace fetched the tallest ladder and discovered the star was not above the glass but inside it, humming like a trapped kettle. Because of that, he pecked the wrong pane, and every leaf in the archive began whispering tomorrow’s weather in dramatic voices. “Quiet, you theatrical salad,” he muttered, while curiosity tugged him up another rung.

At last he tapped the extra star with one careful claw. It popped, soft as a soap bubble, releasing a moth-sized moonbeam that fluttered into his ledger and wrote: FOURTEEN IS A BETTER NUMBER. Horace shut the book, grinning despite himself, and tapped the brass rail for exactly thirteen winks—then one sneeze with ambition.
