🎨 How to color it

Try a sapphire-blue airplane body, silver propellers, golden sun rays, and cottony white clouds edged with pale lavender. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow stained-glass panels around the sun and wings, then fill the larger cloud shapes with smooth, even strokes. For extra glow, alternate lemon yellow and warm orange in the sunbeams so the plane feels like it is racing through morning light.

Every morning, Calder tucked a dull brass key under his scarf before he helped load mail onto the twin-prop courier. It opened nothing anyone could see, but he always tapped it twice for luck, click-click, while the engines coughed awake and the runway smelled of rain and fuel.

Until one day, a burst of ice fog swallowed the stained-glass air route, and the sun panels above the clouds went dark. Because of that, the pilot could not find the safe gap between the cloud towers. Because of that, Calder spotted a shivering flock of glass-winged swifts trapped where the cold light had gone blue.

He slipped the brass key into a tiny slot beneath his seat—the secret his mother had shown him once—and twisted. No bell rang. No one cheered. But overhead, golden spokes of sunlight swung open, warm as toast, and the swifts flashed through the gap. Calder only tucked the key away before the captain called, “Clear sky ahead!” Next time you notice the sunburst over the airplane, see if you can keep Calder’s click-click secret.
