🎨 How to color it

Use burnished gold for the roast turkey, cranberry red for the pie centers, sage green for the leaf border, and deep orange for the pumpkins and corn. Because the table is packed with narrow stained-glass panes, layer colored pencils lightly in each section and sharpen often around the plates, chair backs, wheat heads, and braided pie crust. Try a mischievous glow by shading the central platter warm and making the outer scrollwork cooler in blue-gray and violet.

Every year, Marnie slid place cards two inches left, so the quietest guest landed nearest the rolls; until one year, the rolls vanished with a buttery squeak. Because of that, forks paused midair, and because of that, Marnie crawled beneath the table, smelling sage, wax, and dust, where she found a napkin pouch pinned under the cloth, stuffed with warm rolls and a note: “For whoever forgot to ask.” She laughed once, very softly, then tucked one beside every plate before climbing back with innocent elbows. The quietest guest smiled at the rolls.
