At first light, Octavia paced the upper field with a ruler, noting how every furrow curved toward the farmhouse as if the soil had been giggling overnight. The air smelled of cut hay and warm dust; even the barn roof flashed innocent red in the spreading sun. She followed one particular ray across the porch, over the barn doors, and up the striped silo, where her pencil began tapping by itself. Then the silo answered: hollow, bright, and full of marbles. Someone—possibly the weather vane, possibly the clouds—had hidden a whole jar of sunrise-colored glass balls in the cap, and each beam was only showing off its favorite. Octavia laughed, left the ruler on the steps, and let the furrows keep giggling overnight.
