🎨 How to color it

Layer burnt orange on the large maple leaves, golden ocher on the acorns, olive green on the oak sprigs, and deep burgundy in the scalloped outer petals. Use sharp colored pencils and work one ring at a time, because the leaf veins, acorn caps, and tiny scrolls reward careful points. For a quiet twist, shade each repeated maple circle slightly darker as it moves outward, like autumn deepening around the mandala.

In the hush of the old rotunda, Sylvie rolled a brown coat button between her fingers and listened to rain ticking on the glass dome. She had taken the subway alone for the first time, one stop, then three blocks under yellow trees, to see the floor her mother had loved: a stone wheel of leaves, nuts, stars, and curling vines. The button looked ordinary, but its rim held the warmth of the hand that had sewn it back on before every hard day.

She stepped onto the first circle. Maple points led to oak curves; acorns gathered like small sealed letters. Her shoes made no sound on the polished stone, and the air smelled faintly of dust, wax, and wet wool. At the center, she opened her palm. The button’s four holes matched the tiny cross of the innermost leaf, and suddenly the whole floor seemed less like a decoration than a map that had been waiting to teach her how circles begin.

Sylvie did not feel brave in a large way. She only breathed in, tucked the button safely away, and chose the longer way home beneath the yellow trees.
