Before bears hummed, the hilltop orchard was almost quiet at sunrise. Orso pressed both paws to his chest because a warm, buzzy tune kept bumping around inside him, too big for one small cub. He climbed the old twist-barked tree to let it out somewhere high, where the air smelled of leaves and rain-washed apples.
Halfway up, a tiny dawnbird landed above him by surprise. Her beak opened, and silver notes poured out like drops into a cup. Orso gasped. The tune in his chest answered with a soft mmm, shaking the bark under his paws.
“Share it,” chirped the bird.
Orso leaned his cheek to the hollow trunk and hummed. The tree carried the sound down to the roots, up to the leaves, and out across every den in the orchard. Bears below woke smiling, their own chests buzzing. Ever since, when joy grows too big inside a bear, it comes out as a hum—next time you see Orso in the branches, can you find where the first one began?
