Under the soft ferns, Pip tucked his moon-shaped stone against his cheek. It was smooth, warm, and smelled faintly of sun-baked sand. He wanted to keep it all morning, just for himself, while the volcano went puff-puff in the distance. Then a tiny chirp came from beyond the black rocks. Pip lifted his nose. The chirp shivered again.
He stepped out of his cozy fern hollow and tiptoed across scratchy pebbles. Ash dust tickled his toes, and a hot breeze ruffled the stripes on his neck. At the far palm, a hatchling sat in the cool shade, too chilly to peep loudly. “Here,” Pip whispered, rolling the moon-stone close. The hatchling leaned on it and sighed, peep-peep, warm at last. Soon two little dinosaurs, then three, pressed near, sharing the glow. Pip came home without the stone in his claws, but with a bigger warmth thumping in his chest. If you spot the smiling raptor, can you tell who he is hurrying to warm next?
