🎨 How to color it

Color the velociraptor sandy tan with rust-orange stripes, the palm fronds deep green, the volcano warm charcoal, and the smoke pale gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the raptor’s narrow stripes, teeth, claws, and the long lava lines down the volcano, then fill the larger rocks with smoother strokes. Try making the smoke fade from gray at the crater to lavender at the top so the tan raptor stands out against the sky.

Before sunrise, while the nest hollow still smelled of dry grass and sleepy scales, Kavo lined six white pebbles in a ring. One spot stayed empty. He tapped it with one claw and whispered, “I’ll bring the volcano’s warmest black stone before the smoke turns pink.” The challenge made his tail twitch. He left the soft hollow, passed the fan palms clicking in the breeze, and stepped onto the gray flats where old lava felt wrinkled under his toes.

The mountain breathed with a low huff-huff, and ash tickled Kavo’s nose like pepper. Near a shining crack, he saw a perfect black stone, smooth as an egg. When he hooked it closer, its edge nicked his claw. A tiny bead of red appeared. Kavo sat still, listening to the volcano rumble and the palm leaves clatter far behind him. The stone was warm, yes, but the place felt too big to carry home.

Then he noticed a small striped rock beside his foot, marked with colors like his own back. It was cool, light, and shaped just right for the empty space. Kavo limped home with it tucked in his jaws. At dusk, he set it among the six white pebbles, and the ring looked less like a challenge and more like a nest that knew his name. Next time you see the striped raptor near the smoking mountain, can you spot the kind of stone he chose?
