At center court, Benny tapped the tiny volleyball button on his headband. Tap-tap. He wanted it to shine before the first serve, because his big cheer always began with that little gleam.
But the button winked toward the far fence. Benny shuffled after it, past squeaky sneakers, net shadows, and the popcorn smell from the benches. He dropped his spare ball—thump!—and had to carry it under one arm. “Wait for me,” he whispered.
