🎨 How to color it

Color the volleyball’s curved panels sky blue, sunny yellow, and white, then make the sneakers cherry red and the four sparkles golden. The big rounded panels are perfect for chunky crayons or broad marker strokes; save a sharper pencil for the tiny eyes, cheeks, and shoe stripes. Try adding pale lavender shadows under the two puff clouds so the bouncing ball looks like it really popped off the ground.

From the warm equipment cubby, Pip rolled one inch, then two, reaching for the shiny whistle that Coach had dropped by the gym door. The floor smelled like dust and lemon polish. Pip did not like the dark blue spaces under the bleachers, but the whistle gave a tiny peep-peep, as if calling. When Pip bounced after it, a silver cricket hopped out wearing a thread for a scarf. “Follow the squeak,” it chirped.

Pip bounced past the cold net pole and over a chalky line, bumping one sneaker and making a small oof. At center court, four sleepy sparkles blinked awake above the floor. The cricket bowed. “They only shine for a first brave bounce.” Pip carried back not the whistle, but its secret sound: peep, bounce, shine! Next time you spot those sparkles over Pip, can you guess which one woke up first?
