Under the warm desert sun, Elio tapped the rim of the clay pot and whispered, “One brave tap for one bright ray.” He had just invented the Sunbeam Dare: count each line of light without hiding behind the tallest cactus pad. The pot felt sandy and warm under his fingers. Far off, the low hills shimmered like sleepy turtles, and tiny grass tufts made dry little shh-shh sounds in the breeze.
Elio counted softly, then louder. “Seven… eight… nine.” At the tenth ray, the cactus flower opened a little wider, and its yellow middle seemed to count with him in pollen-dust sparkles. Elio held still, wonder-full, while a bee’s hum made the air buzz like a secret bell. The game was not his alone; the bloom had been daring the sunshine, too.
