Every day after practice, Rhett lined up the jerseys by number, tapped each helmet twice, and rolled the footballs into their bin with a soft thump-thump. He wanted Coach Vega’s silver kickoff whistle to turn up before Saturday, but the locker room only smelled of grass, rubber, and somebody’s forgotten orange peels. He checked cleats. He checked water coolers. He even checked inside a tuba case left by the marching band.
Until one day, a sleeve seam on the spare jersey tickled his wrist and made a tiny clink. Because of that, Rhett waited until everyone raced out for pizza before he pinched the stitching and heard another clink-clink. Because of THAT, he borrowed a thread snipper, opened one careful inch, and out slid the whistle, three sunflower seeds, and a note: “Nice patience, equipment captain. Also, please stop blaming the tuba.”
At kickoff, Coach Vega blew the whistle so hard a pigeon hopped off the scoreboard. Rhett only grinned and tapped the helmets twice, wondering which seam might giggle next—can you spot the place where the secret waited with a soft thump-thump?
