Under the hush of Starbell Meadow, Eldric pressed a bent tin button under one claw and watched the daisies nod in the warm grass. He wanted the button to belong somewhere important, not rattling in his pocket like a pebble in a pan. The trouble was, every flower already had a place, every cloud had a drift, and every fairy bell knew its own bright note.
Then Fia zipped down, wings whispering like paper fans. “Secret trade?” she said, tapping her wand against the button. Ting! The button sprang into the air, scattering tiny specks of light that smelled faintly of sun-warmed honey. Eldric gasped as each speck tucked itself into a daisy’s round middle, dot by dot, until the flowers looked as if they were saving little pieces of night.
Fia winked. The meadow had been waiting for that button all along; ever since, daisies have carried star-dots in their centers so small dragons know when they are exactly where they belong. Next time you spot the wand’s sparkle beside Eldric, see if you can find the first button-star hiding among the flowers.
