The upper-floor dance room smelled of floor wax and rainy brick when Aster tied the last strip of muslin to her homemade recital banner. She wanted it to snap like a ship’s sail during her solo, so she stretched at the barre and tested each ribbon with her pointed shoe—swish, tug, flutter. Outside the tall windows, buses hissed below and pigeons clapped off the ledge.
A tap-tap-tap answered from the glass. A blue kite, no bigger than a notebook, bobbed there with a paper tag on its tail: WIND CHECK? Aster laughed and slid the window open. “I made something too,” she whispered. A rooftop kite club on the next building cheered, their scarves bright in the gust. They sent a spool across on a string, and Aster fastened it to her banner with the careful knots she had practiced all week.
The room became a harbor. Her barre was a mast, her lifted leg the bow, and her handmade banner bellied out, proud and full of city wind. Next time you spot the tall windows and that high stretch, can you find where the rainy brick breeze sailed in?
