🎨 How to color it

Layer blush pink on the pointe shoes, pearl white on the three tutus, soft gold on the stars, and deep rose in the flower bow. Use sharp pencils and color one narrow patterned panel at a time, turning the page as you follow the long shoe curves and tiny spirals. For a mischievous twist, make the checkerboard section black and teal while letting one hidden spiral glow like stage-light lime.

In the costume loft, Vesper lined up the slippers by squeak: soft, softer, scandalously squeaky. Dust smelled faintly of chalk and old violets, and every ribbon she measured seemed to curl away as if it had somewhere better to be. She wanted to catalog the odd little marks that kept appearing after midnight rehearsals—stars beside buckles, leaves near bows, one tiny arrow that pointed to absolutely nothing useful.

The marks multiplied. A paisley curled into a question mark. A checkerboard square refused to match its neighbors. Vesper followed them with the grave patience of a detective and the grin of a thief, until a ribbon spiral on the longest shoe loosened with a papery sigh. Inside was not a note, but a folded menu for “Mouse Intermission Snacks,” signed in ink no bigger than pepper: Please stop stepping on the crackers.

Vesper laughed so hard the hanging tutus shivered. She added one new label to her catalog—Evidence of Very Small Critics—and tucked the menu back where no sensible person would look. After that, whenever the shoes squeaked, she listened for applause under the chalk and old violets.
