Each morning, before the whistle blew, Nico tucked one shiny button into his pocket and made a dare: do one helpful thing before anyone thanked him. The cab smelled like coal dust and warm metal as Engine 123 rattled toward the country crossing.
One day, the striped gate stuck down with a clack-clack-clack, and a milk cart waited in the road. Because of that, the train paused. Because of that, Nico spotted the crossing keeper’s lamp sputtering in the wind, almost dark.
“Hold my button,” Nico whispered to the engine. He dashed over gravel, left a little can of oil by the post, and scrambled back as the gate lifted. The keeper never saw him. Engine 123 puffed away, and if you peek at the crossing, you might catch where Nico’s secret help happened.
