After supper, the pebble gully went click-click under Willa’s feet, and she carried a fern leaf to her nest for a soft bedtime hum. But the wind only hissed through the dry stems. Willa tipped her head. Far past the warm sleeping rocks came a low hoo-hoo, gentle as a yawn. She stepped out to find it, though the cool dust tickled her toes and one burr stuck to her tail.
The sound came from a giant old bone leaning by the little ferns. Willa nudged it, and out rolled a round seed pod that had been tucked deep inside, where nobody ever peeked. “You were singing!” she whispered. She carried the bone and pod home, a little dusty and very pleased. At her nest, the pod hummed inside the bone whenever the breeze passed through. Next time the pebble gully goes click-click, can you spot Willa’s bedtime singer?
