All along the pebble path, Bramble kept one shed scale tucked in his backpack pocket for show-and-tell. It clicked softly against his ink roll with each step, tik, tik, tik, while morning smelled of wet grass and chalk dust drifting from the hilltop school.
The bell tower rose above the roof like a little house for sound. Bramble liked arriving early, when the open doors breathed cool hallway air and nobody had shouted hello yet. He lifted his claw to wave at the empty windows, and something pale fluttered from the bell rope.
It was a moth, but its wings were shaped like two tiny ears. The creature settled on the silent bell and trembled. Bramble understood without words: the bell had forgotten its voice. He slipped his bright scale beneath the clapper and stepped back just as sunlight touched the tower.
Bong! The note rolled over bushes, flowers, clouds, and cobblestones. Children would think the bell had woken by itself. Bramble only smiled and walked on, his pocket quiet now—can you spot the path where his tik, tik, tik began?
