Under the tulip slope, Junie pressed one ear to the huge egg and waited for a tap. She wanted to hear what slept inside, but only the grass went shhh and the wet leaves smelled like rain.
A silver beetle crawled from a tulip cup. “Not yet,” it whispered. Drip by drip, it rolled dew across the shell: dots first, then zigzags, then little flowers. Junie held very still, even when her nose tickled.
