Under the king’s stone pit, Nero lined up seven date pits beside his knee. He had set himself a challenge: before the morning rope came down, he would spend every pit on one secret thank-you. The den smelled like dust, fur, and old straw. A lion’s tail thumped—whump—against the wall. Nero slid one pit aside and scratched behind the nearest lion’s ear.
“Payment accepted,” he whispered.
The big lion leaned into his hand with a rumble like a sleepy cartwheel. Nero spent another pit smoothing a burr from a paw. Another went for combing a mane with his fingers. He tried not to giggle when the second lion tipped his chin up like a nobleman waiting for perfume.
Then Nero noticed the date pits had moved. Not lost—stacked. The lions had been pushing them back, one by one, toward his sandal. Their golden eyes shone with mischief. They were counting his kindnesses and refusing to let him run out.
So Nero used the last pit anyway. He tucked it between two stones for whoever entered next, a tiny thank-you with nobody watching. When morning light slipped through the arch, dare yourself to find the little place where a lion-sized secret might still be hiding.
