The first path to Brambleglass Castle was meant to be straight as a ruler, and Sylvie had the ruler to prove it. She tapped each pebble into place with her acorn mallet—tink, tonk, tink—while wet moss cooled her knees and castle bakers waited for a neat road to roll their berry carts.
Then a black beetle in a bark apron popped from the soil. “Not there,” he whispered. Under Sylvie’s next stone lay a baby root, white and soft as a noodle. Under the next, a sleeping toad. Under the next, a mushroom button just pushing up through the dark.
So Sylvie did something better than straight. She bent the path around every secret life she found, fitting stones with her own two hands until the road curled like a ribbon dropped from a pocket. Ever since, castle paths wiggle on purpose, and if you follow this one with your finger, you may spot the places Sylvie refused to squash.
