Every day, Kozbi raced ahead of the scouts, tapping stones with his stick and sniffing the hot, dusty wind. He wanted to find the safest trail before the men carrying the heavy fruit reached the next hill. “This way has shade!” he called, even when nobody hurried.
Until one day, the road split three ways beside a vine as wide as a blanket. Because of that, the scouts stopped, puffing and shifting the pole on their shoulders. Because of that, Kozbi had time to kneel under the grape leaves, where cool green shadows smelled sweet and sticky. There, hidden where nobody had looked, was a line of tiny ants marching toward a thin stream.
At last Kozbi followed the ants to water, and the tired scouts laughed with relief. When you see the big grape cluster, can you find the leaves that kept Kozbi’s quiet surprise waiting?
