Behind the thick purple curtains, Lior pressed one finger to a harp string and invented a game: whisper a word, pluck, then see if the string kept it. “Home,” he breathed. Ting! The sound was small as a spoon tap, but it warmed his thumb. Still, the palace felt too tall, with pillars like tree trunks and a king’s chair curling like ram horns.
Then David came in, smelling of sheep wool and sunny hills, and sat where the lamp-light touched the harp. Lior scooted close. The king looked tired, but David’s fingers made the strings hum like bees in clover. Lior whispered, “Home,” one more time, and this time every string shivered with it. That is why harps have kept secrets ever since: they hold the words that belong in a room. If you peek at the strings, can you guess which one kept Lior’s word?
