Every night, Aurelia walked the same rim of the salt plain, where the ground clicked faintly under her hooves and the air smelled of cold stone. She wanted to cross to the blue-black ridge beyond it, but each time the white distance opened before her, she turned back to the safe line of grass.
Until one night, a moon-moth as large as her ear settled on her mane, its wings dusted like frost. Because of that, she stood still long enough to hear another sound under the clicking salt: water, hidden and patient. Because of that, she followed the moth’s pale dips from one firm crust to the next, lifting each hoof as if asking permission.
At the middle of the plain, the moth rose, and the ridge no longer looked far. Aurelia breathed in the mineral wind, placed one careful hoof ahead, and crossed the white distance that had always sent her back to the safe line of grass.
