Under the moonlit picnic blanket, Zadie balanced on her striped paper cup and invented a game called Ask the Next Sprinkle. The rules were simple: point to a sprinkle, ask it a question, and follow whatever answer popped into your head. “Round sprinkle, where does hiccup noise sleep?” she whispered. The grass smelled damp and minty, and the crickets clicked like tiny spoons on teacups.
One dot said hiccups slept in acorn hats. Another insisted the stars were crumbs from a giant cookie. Zadie’s frosting swirl wobbled with giggles as her cherry stem leaned like a question mark. She asked the leaf on top, “Who is the sneakiest guest at this picnic?” A breeze curled through the blanket fringe, and the answer came in a squeaky voice: “Me.”
The voice belonged to a field mouse wearing a fallen star-shaped cracker as a helmet. He had been playing too, answering from beneath the napkin and trying not to snort. Zadie made him Chief Sprinkle Interpreter at once. Together they asked the cherry one last question, and if you check the curly confetti, you may hear what hiccup noise said under the moonlit picnic blanket.
