Under the blackberry roots, Hazel pressed a striped acorn to her ear. It used to hum when Mama tucked it beside the moss bed, but tonight it only felt cool and bumpy. From outside came a soft tik-tik, like rain on a tin cup. Hazel wanted that hum back, so she tucked the acorn to her chest and stepped past the last safe leaf.
The ditch beyond the roots smelled of wet clay and moonflowers. Tik-tik went the dark. Hazel’s toes sank in mud, and one burr snagged her prickles, but she kept going until a firefly blinked inside an empty snail shell. “Put it here,” whispered a tiny voice. Hazel set the acorn by the shell, and the firefly light slipped through its cap lines. Mmmmm. The acorn hummed—not Mama’s tune, but a new one, bright and secret. Hazel carried it home, muddy-footed and wide-eyed; if you spot the acorn in her paws, can you guess which tiny light is still singing under the blackberry roots?
