🎨 How to color it

Color the lovebirds in peachy coral and soft teal, make the heart-vine leaves emerald green, and give the two daisies sunny yellow centers with white petals. Use sharp colored pencils around the small hearts, cheek marks, toes, and leaf tips so the narrow spaces stay crisp. Try a pale pink-to-lavender blend inside the big heart arch to make the birds feel tucked inside a secret glow.

Under the moon-warmed glasshouse roof, Yara rolled a plain brown seed between her claws and listened for the tiny tick she was sure lived inside it. She wanted it to open before the dawn gardeners came, because her brother Kito was leaving for the high aviary and she had nothing to give him. The other birds pecked bright berries from the trays, but Yara kept her seed hidden under one wing, where it smelled of dust and rainwater.

All night, nothing happened. Drip, drip, went the pipes. Silver light slid over fern pots and sleeping orchids. “Wait with me,” Yara whispered when Kito fluttered down beside her. He tucked his beak close, and they sat so still that even the moths forgot to dodge them.

Just before sunrise, the seed split with a soft pop. Two green shoots curled out, met in the middle, and bent into a heart. More hearts followed—leaves, buds, then flowers—climbing around their perch as if patience had learned a shape. Ever since that glasshouse morning, lovebirds have kept heart-vines near their nests, and if you spot the smallest heart between two beaks, you may have found Yara’s first secret still opening.
