Each evening, beneath the glass roof of the mosaic atrium, Calix tapped his tail once for every fountain drip and named the tile where the echo landed. He had just invented a game: count three whiskers, choose the third silence, and never look directly at what moved. The air smelled of wet stone and night-blooming jasmine, and every day the answer was only tile, tile, tile—until one day the third silence answered back.
Because of that, Calix followed the hush past the fountain rim, where gold tesserae loosened like warm seeds. Because of that, the paw-shaped border around the floor began turning, slow and soundless, and the lotus at its center opened a dark blue path no paw had touched. “Again,” he whispered.
At last he sat very still, letting curiosity run farther than his feet. The moving tiles settled around him like a remembered song, and the atrium kept the new rule: count three whiskers, choose the third silence.
