Every night, Vera sprinted the tower stairs of Harrowbell Manor, timing herself by the tick of the iron weather vane and the peppery smell of old chimney soot. She had invented a game called Midnight Spare: find one broken thing, fix it fast, then race the echo back before the next bat crossed the moon. Until one night, the house answered with three knocks from three different walls.
Because of that, Vera followed the knocks and found a cracked attic pane, a jammed music-box door, and a cold room where no candle would hold a flame. Because of that, her own score was ruined; the echo beat her every time. Still, she gave her saved matches to the cold room, her ribbon to the music box, and her scarf to the window seam, laughing as dust snapped in her hair and bats burst past like tossed black gloves.
By dawn, no one had seen her give anything away. The manor simply stood warmer, singing faintly, while the iron weather vane ticked above a girl who had lost the game and won the night.
