Before jellyfish carried gardens on their bells, Elyra searched the starless water for a place that did not pull her away. Every current had a hand in it: salt-cool, velvet-dark, humming against her trailing threads. Then a moonseed, no larger than a tear, brushed her crown and asked, “May I rest where the sea is still?”
Elyra folded her pulse around it. The seed opened without soil, making petals of light, little crescents, and round windows through which the deep looked kind instead of empty. Fish circled nearer. Bubbles rose slower. The tide, finding that bright flower in her bell, curved around her as if it had known her name all along. Since then, jellyfish have worn mandalas there, so every wandering current can find its quiet center in the starless water.
