Under the glassy bloom, Quin invented a game: copy the smallest light and pass it on before the current could steal it. A pinprick glimmer flashed beyond the safe blue hush, between two round bubbles that rang faintly like wet crystal. Quin slipped after it, trading one silver thread from his longest arm to squeeze through a narrow seam of cold water.
Beyond the seam, the sea opened into a current gallery, all arches of moving dark and pale ribbons. The glimmer was not one light but many, tucked inside the bends of the water, waiting for someone to notice. Quin pulsed once, then twice, sending his copied lanterns back through every drifting pane. By the time he returned, the bloom shone with a joy too large to keep, and even his missing thread seemed to glow under the glassy bloom.
